Marino on Money: April 16

READ MORE: Who will benefit from incentives?
marino300.jpg
This week, we discussed the main agencies, which will receive stimulus money. The biggest dollar amounts go to Medicaid, education, and food stamps. Who else will benefit from incentives? New car buyers can deduct their sales tax up to a limit. First time homebuyers also have a great incentive. Anyone unemployed will receive $25 per week more, their benefits may be extended for another six months, and the government will subsidize 65% of the cost of their health insurance under COBRA. There are many more programs, which lower to middle income families will qualify for. Unless you are successful in business or have a higher income, you should receive some type of direct benefit from the stimulus package. Next week we'll answer the questions: Who are we borrowing from to pay for this? Can we ever repay it? If you have any questions, click on Marino on Money, and send us a question. Ross Marino will be answering questions right here on our 5 o'clock news every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Taxpayers Pick-up the Tab!

Most will help a person in need who honestly tries to make a future for themselves....and by future I do not mean a career living off government (really tax payer) hand-outs. This is not fair to the worker who pays taxes, or the underclass it creates. That's right, if you are too successful in paying your own bills, you will be punished by paying the bills of others.

Get your facts straight!

"Anyone unemployed will receive $25 per week more, their benefits may be extended for another six months, and the government will subsidize 65% of the cost of their health insurance under COBRA." WRONG! The Government isn't subsidizing 65% of the premium under the COBRA provision...the EMPLOYER is! What wasn't reported, was IF the employer terminates the group health insurance plan, coverage under the COBRA provision stops as well. No Group = No COBRA coverage.

The Facts Are Straight

The employer pays 65%, and the government REIMBURSES the employer through a tax credit. Meaning, there is no net cost to the employer. It really is just another government handout. Here is a link to the US Department of Labor. http://www.dol.gov/ebsa/cobra.html

This is the

Best a Certified Financial Planner can do? Expound on the Government give away programs with slight mention of a tax break for first time new home buyers and purchasers of new cars? This is it? Heck, the Obama minions receiving doles and hand outs already know this. And here I thought we might see some weighty discussions on how we can survive in this current stock market cycle. Maybe a comment or 2 on 401k and pension plans. Perhaps a comment on the state of Social Security. Silly Me.

Medicaid.....sounds like the

Medicaid.....sounds like the very ones who don't put anything into the system are still going to get the lion's share of taxpayer money, as usual.

I'll tell you what... If

I'll tell you what... If you can come help deal with an extremely strong and violent 150lb eleven year old non-verbal low functioning autistic boy who is still in pull-ups and can't take care of himself at all FOR FREE you can stop our Medicaid. Medicaid isn't always about what's going in or out of the system. It's sometimes about caring for children where health insurance can't or won't.

I think all this medicaid

I think all this medicaid and foodstamps programs are not fair. All it says is it okay not to work. The taxpayers are picking up their tab. People on foodstamp eat better than I do. What did people do back in the 50's when there were no such freebies??? I'll tell you they got off their butts and worked.

Autism

My Blue Cross Blue Shield doesn't cover autism. The school system gives us and hour and a half a month of speech therapy. I wish I could get him on Medicaid. But it's only a kid with autism. I mean its not like he's important. I wish I had a big corporate job to loose so I could get all this free stuff. Instead I'll just wrangle my kid best I know how.

You had him

You had him, you take care of him. What makes you think everyone else should have to?

WHAT DID YOU SAY!

OH, MY GOODNESS, I CANNOT BELIEVE YOU JUST SAID THAT. THAT WAS THE MOST CRUDE AND INHUMANE THING I'VE EVER HEARD. YOU DON'T KNOW HOW LUCKY YOU ARE IF YOUR KIDS ARE SUPPOSEDLY NORMAL,BUT THEY CAN'T BE FOR LONG WITH YOUR ATTITUDE. THIS PERSON WORKS AND "IS" TAKING CARE OF A CHILD WITH AUTISM, NOT LOOKING FOR A FREE RIDE, THERE "SHOULD"BE MORE RESOURCES FOR THEM, YOU INCONSIDERATE JERK! GOD BLESS ALL THOSE FAMILIES OUT THERE WITH CHILDREN THAT NEED A LITTLE MORE HELP. JUST KEEP LOVING THEM AND REMEMBER GOD DOESN'T MAKE MISTAKES.

Autism Anger

You're right, I did have him, I love him and take care of him better than your mother took care of you based on your hate filled comment. The old numbers show that one out of 150 kids is autistic. The new numbers coming out of the UK show the numbers to be more like one out of 65. 20 years ago it was one out of 1000. Let's hope your grandchild doesn't have a vaccine injury like my child did that caused him to get lost in a world with no understanding or compassion. Let's hope your support of Titan spewing 260 pounds of mercury won't end up in your backyard to haunt you. It's not just autism, it's alzheimer's too. Get ready old man, here it comes. I hope there's money left to see to it you get someone to wipe your butt and spoon feed you the last couple of years you will struggle through, but dont worry, you wont notice, just your wife and children will be left to pick up the pieces...for years.

Good for you

I am so glad that you do not have a love one who has a challenge. Don't you realize that helping this child with autism now will be more cost effective in the long run. Help him, help his family, later in life when they are not around, he has a skill to help pay for his needs. Children with autism as just as important as children with typical development or children with physical challenges. A child is a child regardless and they should be provided for. It's not the child that abuses the system, it's their parents. The system works when not abused.

How dare you

I cannot believe the comment you have made. Just thank God that your children are so wonderful and have no problems that were not seen in advance. God help you. I have no problem helping those that work and try to help them selves. But at least try.
