Despite more than 3,000 signatures and support from the local realtors association a spokesperson for Whole Foods says they don't have to plans to open a store in Wilmington. Supporters were hoping Whole Foods would open a new location in the Autumn Hall development on eastwood road.

But right now Wilmington doesn't score high enough on the Whole Foods criteria list. The Wilmington Regional Association of Realtors says this isn't the first time the store has looked to the port city for a new location, and each time the city scores a little higher.
"Whole Foods has had their eye on this area for a while, for several years" says WRAR's Kathleen Riley. "And they keep sort of checking back what's happening, checking back what's happening. And I think each time they do they see how Wilmington is growing."

That's why the WRAR says they'll continue their petition until they reach their goal of 5,000 signatures, and hopefully bring the store to Wilmington. Mary Martin, head of the local realtors association says if Whole Foods isn't willing to come to the area, Wilmington could be an opportunity for one of its competitors.

whole foods?

Yeah this town is aching to spend $8 on a watermelon. These Prius driving, save the earth, subzero refrigerators hypoctrits make me crazy.

And Mary Martin, head of the local realtors association, competition? Try Fresh Market.

We need a petition to get affordable housing.

Whole lotta money

Big deal, I can't afford the food they sell anyways on my wages.

No Idea

I am sure many others who would support a Whole Foods out here are completely unaware of this petition, until WF has already looked at it. Who is the contact and how do we sign the petition?
Why haven't they been advertising this more, in City offices or the Encore even?

whole foods

Just arrived back from Raleigh and shopped at Whole foods, Earth Fare and trader joes before coming back. It would be nice to see them here. They have so many quality items that you just can't find here. The fresh Market does not even begin to compete with these three. Being a chef I am always surprised at how good some of their products are at Whole Foods and how bad the local seafood at our grocery stores is.

WF

wow , your a chef , whole foods is just another big box commercial store who is only interested in making money , not nutrition or making people healthy . have you tried Tidal Creek , or Loveys , and we now have Carolina farmers market . will they buy from local farmers ? and support the local economy as much as possible or buy from corporate farmers elsewahere

So...if Whole Foods comes to town...

and fails...will the Realtors pick up the tab? If Whole Foods thinks the Wilmington market would make a profitable location, they'll build...not because a bunch of part-time real estate agents want them to.

Get a life

Who could be so obsessed with food that they add their name to a list for a grocery store? Even if Whole Foods opened up most would head for the Twinky isle.

NC Native, the people who

NC Native, the people who signed the petition aren't your garden variety grocery shoppers. Store like these cater to those who are health-obsessed more than they are "food" obsessed.
