Why are there so many candidates filing for New Hanover County Commissioner seats?

READ MORE: Why are there so many candidates filing for New Hanover County Commissioner seats?

Jason Harris wants to be a county commissioner even though the job only pays $16,000 a year. Why does he want to do this job so badly? Harris told us "There's a lot of issues that have been overlooked for the past 15 or 20 years and I feel it's time to get down to brass-tax and go to work and make sure we're serving the people of New Hanover County."

Five other fresh faces are vying for the seats as well. Repubicans Rick Catlin, Charles Dorman, Napier Fuller and democrats Deborah Butler and Dale Smith. One of the open spots on the commission currently belongs to Bobby Greer, but he's not running after 20 years as a county commissioner. "When you're first elected, you feel like you're going to go in there and throw the bums out and correct everything. And after you've been there a long time you say 'well geez maybe I'm one of the bums all of a sudden, I need to be thrown out.' I've enjoyed my service to New Hanover County and I'm born and bred here and just figured it was time to move on and let someone else hold the seat."

Commissioner Bill Caster it not going to give up his seat though. "I just felt like since Bobby wanted to step down that I should not, so I could bring that experience on for another four year term, which is all I would do is all I would do is one more four year term." Caster encourages the new candidates to understand what they're getting into.
"It is a whole lot of work and I hope when people say they're going to run for this organization and when, they know what they're getting into, because it takes a lot of time and you can't just skip on things.">

time for change

all the seats need to be filled with new faces, new ideas and people with no tunnel vision.

time for change

I agree too many things are slipping through the cracks and new faces and ideas are just what Wilmington needs.

Good for him!

It is good to see an honest person with a strong financial background and graduate from the Citadel on board to finally help us!!
