Wilmington man competing for "best burger"

WILMINGTON -- A Wilmington man's cooking skills are getting him national recognition. This summer Good Morning America and the popular Chef Emiril teamed up to find the best burger recipe in the nation.

It's down to five finalists and one of them lives right here in Wilmington.

Rocco Poveromo has a passion for cooking. He said, "I've been cooking since I was small. My mother taught me to cook and being raised in an Italian household certainly I was exposed to very good cooking at a very early age."

That cooking experience made him a top five finalist on Good Morning America's summer-long Emeril's Best Burger Challenge. He calls his Italian-influenced burger the "Sopranos burger."

Poveromo said, "My burger is pork, beef, there's grated carrot in it, basil, arugula, goat cheese."

Poveromo now needs your help to advance in the contest. Next week the top three finalists will fly to New York to find out who created the best burger recipe.

Online votes are half of the decision -- the other half is Emeril's opinion.

Rocco's daughter Christina said, "My dad is a really good cook. He's probably the best cook I've ever encountered, so vote for his burger."

Poveromo says he identifies with Emeril and hopes the well-known chef will identify with him.
