Wilmington man found guilty of first-degree murder, attempted robbery

WILMINGTON -- The jury is in. A Wilmington man is guilty of first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery. Tuesday Maurice Miller was found guilty of shooting and killing Pervis Owens Jr. on 10th Street in January of 2006. Miller, now 20, was 18 at the time of the murder. The jury sentenced miller to life in prison without possibility of parole.

I have known this young man since he was in middle school. He is a bright, friendly young man who made a mistake. Whether or not he actually committed the crime, there are only a a few who know for sure, all the rest of us can do is speculate. I don't understand why there had been so much bloodshed over the past few years in downtown Wilmington, but it is disturbing. A lot of it has to do with "gangs" and people who lack direction. Maurice, however, always seemeed to me to be a young man who possessed a wealth of motivation and talent. It is very sad that he will spend the rest of his life behind bars, especially if he is in fact innocent. My heart goes out to him and his family. I believe that there needs to be a conscious effort to reach out to the lower socioeconomic children in our community, especially downtown Wilmington, to prevent this type of thing before it starts. I know too many other young people who are behind bars or are no longer with us for foolish reasons. A

Kids today need role models its easy to talk about someone how about helping someone. Alot of kids these days only know what they see. I'm not making excuses but we need more mentors and active parents to play a role in the lives of these young men. Alot of lives were thrown away behind this. Absent fathers need to take notice and parent their kids. When youth go outside they see drug dealers and users they don't see promise. Thats why they fall victim. I know Reese did wrong he accepts that but how do we save someone else from his fate?

Is this an essay writing contest or is this a forum for people to explain how they feel about this young man spending the rest of his life in jail? Also, I am white and that "you people" comment bothers me. Maybe you would be better off surfing the web and finding some white supremacist forums, I think they may be better suited for you. I knew Maurice, his father, uncles, aunts, grand father and grand mother. I even coached this kid in the Pop Warner football league. This kid had a world of talent that could have taken him somewhere other than where he's at now. After a certain point in one's life there's no one to blame other than that person. It's unfortunate now that his potential will have to be met behind bars for the rest of his natural life.
