Cindy White took her sixth grade son Justin out of Noble Middle School when she found out two of his classmates had swine flu. She is upset because the school didn't tell her. "I just think that we should have been alerted, and what they're doing is hiding it," White said. She said her son has a weak immune system and a family history of autoimmune disease. "I don't really want to get sick or anything because this can kill you,” she said. Robin Thompson said she, her husband, and her eighth grade son at Noble have all been sick with flu symptoms recently. "I asked my son when he was sick, ‘have a lot of kids been out sick” and he told me in one class they had seven kids in one day that was out," Thompson said. The New Hanover County School Board said they are not required to inform parents when students get H1N1. "We are following the guidelines set forth by the New Hanover County Health Department who are in turn following the guidelines set forth by the CDC,” said New Hanover County assistant superintendent Rick Holliday. “Whatever the health department instructs us to do, we will do in a public health emergency." Dr. Holliday said the school board has held three public forums for parents in which the health department discussed H1N1. He said informing parents of students with H1N1 violates child privacy laws. Complicating matters, the New Hanover County Health Department is currently out of the H1N1 vaccine. Cindy White has taken her son Justin out of school. He is on the waiting list to get the H1N1 vaccination but she said until he gets it, he will not be returning to Noble Middle School. White found out about the students with H1N1 because her son was texting the students to find out why they missed class. The New Hanover County Health Department believes they will be getting in more shipments of the H1N1 vaccine from the CDC in the next week.

No, the only way it would

No, the only way it would violate child privacy laws is if they gave out the names of those sick. I worked at a day care and if your child got bitten we couldn't say WHO did the bitting just that your child had been bitten. The same applies here: They don't have to say who at school was sick, but they should inform everyone that the school had an out break. You as parents have a right to know if your child is being exposed, so that, at the very lest, you could watch for signs of flu. The reason they don't want to let parents know about the outbreaks is because of money. Why? Schools get government funds based upon attendance, and they don't get paid for absent childern!

H1N1 is NOT available

THERE IS A WAITING LIST ONLY!

CDC & Health Dept didn't plan well

It's all over our school too. I think we have a right to be told. The CDC and Health Departments have failed us by not requiring that a child who tests positively, have their name given to the child's school as H1N1 positive. The school would then require that the child not be allowed to return to school for a minimum amount of time. Parents would only be notified that a child in the school has tested positive. I've receive similar letters when a child in my daughter's class had LICE! Was that violating Child Privacy Laws??? Without any process in place to help stop the spread, some parents are getting a positive diagnosis from the Doc-in-a-box (MEDAC),given an Anti-viral medication prescription and then send their kid back to school right away. No one knows that this child has been diagnosed with H1N1 and that child could still be contageous and sitting next to your child...

Question

Since this flu has been shown to be dangerous to individuals with low immune systems or other illnesses, why aren't the schools required to let parents know if it is found? It seems to me that it would be safer for the other students - my only thought being, that perhaps parents would be more apt to take their child out of harm's way like this lady did, and the schools don't want the children to miss school.

Schools

The schools don't want to look bad is all that is. They don't want a bad reputation with this H1N1. There is NO H1N1 at either of my doctors or the Health Department. WE are on the waiting list.

Still Vulnerable

Even if you get the H1N1 vaccine, there is still a period of time (3 weeks) where you are still vulnerable to getting the flu and some people require 2 doses separated by a month to be effective.

they are out of piggy flu vaccine

There is a list because the health dept is out of the vaccine right now. why make ignorant comments when you are uninformed?

OUT of H1N1- YES!

Of course they are out! I have called our doctors and the Health Department to find that out. I am very educated and know what I speak of when I speak out. I do NOT make blind statements!! Thank you!

For: GuestknowyourfactsDA

What makes you think she DOESN'T have all of the facts?

H1N1

Both of my children have had the virus. It is all over the schools. I'm not sure why her child is on a waiting list. The New Hanover County Health Dept has the vaccine now.

Schools and H1N1

My child attends school in Columbus County and we had not received any info either. My daughter has been sick now for several days with a fever of 104. I took her to the doctor but they are not really treating unless you are under age 5, elderly or have an immune problem. We are basically having to wait it out and treat her for her temperature. I know of about 15 or so children that have been out because of this. I do know her pediatrician said that all the Health Depts had the vaccine. Too late for us! But is it really all that safe. The research trials have been so small and they had to come up with it really fast. I do know that one child in the school had a reaction to the vaccination and was out for several days. We definately can't take any chances with our children.
