Wilmington Police and New Hanover County Sheriffs take to the court
Law enforcement officers traded in their badges for a basketball Sunday afternoon. Members of the Wilmington Police Department and the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office, squared off in the Big Buddy Shootout. These guys would love to do this every Sunday, but unfortunately law enforcement officers in New Hanover County only get to show off their basketball skills once a year. It was the 16th meeting on the court for the Wilmington Police Department and the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office. Without a doubt, it is a rivalry with department pride on the line. The New Hanover Sheriff's Office took an early lead against Wilmington PD. In fact, the lead was 8 at the half. A lot of these law enforcement officers take basketball seriously, after all, there's nothing better than sports to bring out their competitive spirit. On the other hand, some were quick to admit basketball is something they haven't played in a while. In the second half the Wilmington Police made a ferocious comeback, they pulled within one point, but in the end the victory went to the sheriff's office 51-49. Proceeds from the event will benefit the Cape Fear Volunteer Center's Big Buddy program. The mission of Big Buddy is to support children who need a mentor in their lives to help them thrive and prosper.
