The Wilmington Police Department officially opened its new headquarters on South College Road. Chief Ralph Evangelous said the new location will allow the police department to serve communities on a more personal level. “It's allowed us to take the city and break it into small little segments and each segment has its own individual sets of problems.” After Saturday’s ribbon cutting, residents had the chance to look around the new headquarters where they can file police reports, obtain permits and conduct some other types of police business. Residents say there's a clear advantage to having a second home for the police department on the other side of town. “Having it close by and knowing that somebody is here when you need some help,” said Patrick Davis. For the WPD, the Southeast Division Headquarters means better services for the residents of Wilmington. But the department also hopes it means residents will have a more personal stake in law enforcement. The new station is open to the public 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The WPD Southeast Division Headquarters was scheduled to open February 18t,h but was postponed after the death of Officer Richard Matthews. Chief Evangelous called the ribbon cutting bittersweet.
