Teachers and students from Murray Middle and Ashley High School are on the trip of a lifetime. Thirty students and four teachers are halfway through their excursion to France. They've been keeping track of all the excitement through blogs. One of the teachers wrote about the culture shock in a school cafeteria. "You should expect wine with both lunch and dinner. And not just one glass of wine either! Here, it is as common as water. So we teachers do not wish to offend, in America, that would be a cause for firing! Not so here!" Teachers cut into their personal vacation time to take the trip. Over the phone, freshman Aryn O'Connor told WWAY about her visit to an old concentration camp in Strasbourg. "We went into the crematorium, and it had the stove and everything in it, it was very hard to go through and see that but they also had some of the torture things that they use, that was just horrible for a lot of us." It's not all work. Ryan Grooms blogged about a new outfit he bought for his trip. "I got a fly new outfit that I’m going to wear tomorrow; expect a new Frenchy Ryan." He has a reason to dress up. Friday, students will get to shake hands with President Obama. He's in Strasbourg this week for the NATO Summit. The group and their host families have arranged a special meeting with him while he's there. Members of the Cape Fear Global Club raised money on their own to pay for the trip. The excursion ends on Sunday, April 12th. We plan to catch up with the teachers and students, including Aryn, to tell us more about their discoveries when they return home.

Murray students in France

My daughter is also on this trip. She is having a great time. Our host family has been incredible. Not only are they experiencing a wonderful trip and learning about the french culture, she has also been involved in a history making event with President Obama's visit and "Town Hall Meeting" in Strasbourg. I look forward to reading my daughter's as well as the blogs of the teachers every day. I am so grateful for such a caring and enthusiastic group of teachers to guide them in this fantastic travel experience.

Trip to France

This is an amazing opportunity for students to learn about other cultures. My son is over there and he is learning so much. Since they will be meeting the President of the US.. this will impaact him forever.

Students in Europe

My daughter is with this group. This is a great opportunity for all the students. Thank you teachers and staff for making this possible. Her host family has been just wonderful. And who would think that a trip to France would allow the kids to meet President Obama. The chance of a lifetime.
