If you're flying to your holiday destination, you might be headed for some delays. The large winter storm stretching from Texas to the Canadian border is causing holiday travel troubles across the country. In Wilmington, there have been some delays and cancellations, but nothing too detrimental. That could all change as the blizzard-like storm is expected to worsen Thursday night and Friday morning. "Let's just say everybody gets one glitch per trip and we've had ours," said Susan Freeman. Flight delays and cancellations are putting a bit of a damper on holiday spirits. "My 93-year old father and I are traveling and I got him here at 8:00 for a 9:30 flight which I had checked last night with Delta, and she told me ‘oh, they cancelled that flight and they e-mailed everybody’ but they did not e-mail us,” Freeman said. “So we live in Southport, we turned around and went back to Southport and drove back here." Ray Edwards had family that was delayed Thursday. "Our daughter, and son-in-law and one-year old grand-baby are flying hopefully out of Allentown, but for some reason, went through Charlotte got delayed, so now they say they're on time but now they're delayed and now they're delayed again." But not everyone was having problems. Linda Harlow departed from Columbus with a stop in Atlanta. "It really wasn't too bad, I was pleasantly surprised. I had heard horror stories of planes being delayed in Chicago, but my flights were pretty much on time, I feel like I was very fortunate." Holiday traveling can be a bit of a bumpy ride. If you still have to catch a flight, in order to make it a smooth one, ILM officials recommend arriving an hour-and-a-half to two hours early, check in online or at those available kiosks when possible, and keep all of those Christmas presents unwrapped for safety reasons. "You want to go see your grandchildren and your great grandchildren?” Susan asked. “That's right, it's worth it, that part of it's worth it,” John answered. Again, the big concern is flight delays and cancellations tonight and tomorrow as this winter storm is supposed to keep on moving east and hit places like Chicago. If you're catching a flight or expecting one in, check ilm.com. A US Air flight from Charlotte scheduled to arrive this evening is already delayed.
