Witnesses not cooperating with investigators

READ MORE:
WILMINGTON -- Since January police in Wilmington have investigated four murders. Out of the four three are still unsolved. One of the biggest problems in solving these cases is that people aren't coming forward with information. Police say this is going on all over the country: people who witness a crime or are a victim often don't cooperate with investigators. Law enforcement officials want to send a message to the community to stop the silence and help end the violence. The "blue ribbon" committee has been formed to work on combating the issue. To try and encourage people, especially the young, to come forward with information on crimes, Wilmington police are working on a system so witnesses can anonymously text information to law enforcement officers. WPD Chief Ralph Evangelous said, "It's really frustrating for us because we want to get these bad guys off the street just like everyone else, because what's going to happen is some innocent person is going to be shot or killed." Chief Evangelous says other cities have also had success through rap videos that send a message that coming forward with information is not snitching, it's helping the community. Police say some of the reasons people don't come forward is the fear of getting hurt or being considered a snitch by their peers. For one woman whose son was murdered almost a year ago the lack of information is causing personal pain.

Grow a pair will you

If people are affraid to come foward, then they need to stop wasting everyones time by complaining about LEO not doing anything. If they don't have enough guts to stand up for themselves, then they deserve what ever happens to them or their neighborhood. They obviously don't care what's going on in their neighborhood or they would do something about it. I guess a loss of life means nothing to them

KNOW ABOUT IT BEFORE YOU SPEAK ABOUT IT

IT'S EASY FOR SOMEONE NOT IN THIS SITUATION TO SPEAK SO BOLDLY ABOUT THIS SITUATION. OBVIOUSLY, YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THOSE WHO LIVE IN THESE CRIME INFESTED NEIGHBORHOODS, WHERE LIFE IS A DAILY STRUGGLE. IT IS VERY COMMON FOR A PERSON/ WITNESS TO BE HARRASSED, AND SOMETIMES MURDERED, JUST FOR SPEAKING UP FOR WHAT IS RIGHT. AND NOT JUST THE WITNESS IS AT RISK, BUT THEIR FAMILIES ARE AS WELL. I'M NOT SAYING THAT IT'S OKAY FOR PEOPLE TO NOT TAKE A STAND, BUT YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT'S IT LIKE TO HAVE TO LIVE IN THESE NEIGHBOHOODS. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE A WITNESS TO A CRIME (MURDER) AND YOU AND YOUR FAMILY WERE HARRASSED, OR MURDERED JUST BECAUSE YOU TRIED TO DO THE RIGHT THING??? I WOULD LIKE TO THINK THAT YOU WOULD DO ANYTHING TO PRESERVE YOUR LIFE AND THE LIVES OF YOUR LOVED ONES. IT IS A SHAME THAT YOU THINK THAT ANYONE DESERVES TO BE MURDERED. MAYBE IF YOU WERE IN THIS SITUATION YOU WOULD UNDERSTAND.

afraid to talk

Iwork in the public and so often hear "I wouldn't said anything either because your name is given once people go to court. It must be revealed. If it were me i would be afraid also.

Wrong...

Wrong...you can make an anonymous phone call to the police or 911. And if you are affraid to call the police then you are just as much of a problem as the thugs that are causing harm. I have personally reported 3 crimes since I moved to Wilmington 5 years ago. I had to go to court on two of them. I was threatend twice. One was a couple of our gang banger thugs breaking into a house. I had to testify that I could point out two of the 5 suspects. Another was a domestice where I saw a guy hit his wife/girlfriend several times. This happened around the corner from Kohl's. I called the police and then tried to stop the guy. Believe it or not, the lady denied it happened when it went to court. But thanks to my testimony and the pictures taken by the city police he was found guilty anyway.

GOOD

Good job WilmMan. I would do the same. I have no problem calling the cops on anyone either. Luckily I have not been witness to a horrible crime but I would speak up if I had.

witnesses

It might help if departments would stop projecting blame.Get out and do your job!I would not worry about being a snitch, but worry about my life!

Thus proving what I have said before...

The police can't clean up the community - only the community can clean it up. If you're too big a pansy to stand up for what is right and tell the police what you know, then don't cry the blues when it's your brother, son, dad, friend....or YOU lying in that street, dying! I'd rather be thought of as having a backbone and a conscience, than being thought of as "cool."

same people

These are the same people that bitch that the police aren't doing enough to help them. If you want help, then start by being helpful!!

wut?

plz!!!! tha po,po don,t care bout no-one but there own!! so,if it ain them they don,t care!!that,s tha truth!!
