WILMINGTON -- One local woman has spent the majority of her life helping others, and it has been a long, fruitful life. She's 85 years old and gives hope to people every time she clocks in for work. Her name is Madeline Jordan, but you can call her granny. Jordan said, "Even my patients call me granny, the doctors call me granny, the nurses call me granny, I'm just granny to everybody." Granny's family, friends and co-workers joined together to celebrate her 85th birthday. That makes her the oldest employee at Wilmington's Cape Fear Hospital. Jordan has been a permanent fixture there for the past 36 years, working as a nurses' assistant. "I love what I do," she said. "I love meeting people and helping people, and that's what you do when you're in the hospital, you meet a lot of nice people and there's always somebody to help." Those who work alongside Jordan say her work ethic is unmatched and that she's an inspiration to many. Co-worker Janet Toedt said, "She just keeps showing up and we keep letting her, because she's a valuable resource, the patients identify with her, especially some of our older population, that are having surgeries done, I mean they see this 85 year old woman up and moving she moves like house a fire, we just love her." Granny only works two days a week, but those days are full of spreading joy to others. And at the age of 85, she doesn't plan on retiring anytime soon. "As long as I'm able to come down here, and hold my end of the job up, and do what I'm supposed to do, until I get as sick as some of the patients then I'll stay home." Granny says all she needs to do to keep going is take her vitamins.
