If you have ever traveled College Road, you have probably spent some time stuck in traffic. The City of Wilmington is taking steps to alleviate some of that congestion by next summer. Crews have already started work to widen Independence Boulevard. The city hopes new lanes will provide drivers with an alternative route to South College Road. The expansion will stretch from Shipyard Boulevard to Carolina Beach Road and expand Independence from two lanes to four. “It's part of an overall transportation plan where we're trying to make major connections east and west and north and south to try and take some of the pressure off some of these neighborhood streets,” said Director of Public Services Richard King. The $4.7 million project is funded by the 2006 transportation bond. The 2-mile expansion will also extend Museum Drive to Independence, add bike lanes to the road, and create a section of the Cross City Trail. Work is expected to be completed by next August.
