WPD: Man robbed while gun held to his head

THE FOLLOWING IS A NEWS RELEASE FROM THE WILMINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT:

Case#: 2011-000526

Time: 3:29 a.m. - Wednesday

Offense: Armed Robbery

Location: 4295 Birchwood Dr.

Summary: The victim reported that as he was getting out of his car in the parking lot, a man came up behind him, placed a handgun to his head and reached into his back pocket to take his wallet. The victim said the robber took cash and credit cards from the wallet. Then the robber hit the victim in the back of the head and ran into the woods nearby. The victim later found his wallet near the wood line.

I lived in the Birchwood Apartment Complex for roughly 3 years. I'm surprised this is the first case of armed robbery I have heard about. The complex itself is nice but the area around it is not and there were always shady characters hanging around. And with the woods right there, it is a prime spot for criminal activity. I'm glad the victim got out of the ordeal okay and I hope that the police increase there presence and patrolling in that area.
