RALEIGH (AP) -- New Hanover Representative Thomas Wright says any campaign finance mistakes were the result of sloppiness.
Wright is under investigation for possible violations of campaign finance law. He told a Wilmington newspaper nothing was deliberate.
Investigators with the State Board of Elections said last week Wright accepted nearly $221,000 in campaign contributions that he did not report between 2000 and 2006.
Investigators also said he didn't report hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign expenses, including more than $240,000 that appeared to have paid for personal items.
The elections board referred the case to the Wake County district attorney.
Several legislative leaders have asked Hanover to step down. Wright says he won't do that.
