NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- Thomas Wright is left out. House Speaker Joe Hackney recently appointed representatives to the budget committee. But Thomas Wright was the only democrat who didn't get a seat. Most likely it means local representation at the state level will suffer. According to published reports, none of Rep. Wright's bills in the State House have made progress since his state Board of Elections hearing three weeks ago. During that hearing the board presented evidence of more than $250,000 in undocumented campaign contributions. Now House Speaker Hackney is publicly saying Wright can no longer be an effective leader. And Wright's local colleagues agree. Sen. Julia Boseman said, "Unfortunately, the people of Wright's district have no representation in the house. Rep. McComas and I have asked him to step down. The governor, lieutenant governor, speaker of the house, the treasurer. He's ineffective." Rep. Bonner Stiller said that Wright's legal problems certainly will not help local representation. Meanwhile, as of Thursday, the house ethics committee has begun its own investigation into representative Wright. This is in addition to the investigation by the state bureau of investigation.
