WWAY wins five AP Awards

WILMINGTON - WWAY NewsChannel 3 won five North Carolina Associated Press Radio and Television Awards for its news coverage in 2009, including an Honorable Mention for Best Newscast. The AP presented the statewide awards at its annual luncheon Saturday in Charlotte.

Chris Phillips won the award for Best Weather. As Chief Meteorologist Chris leads the WWAY ESP 3 Weather Team.

Anchor and reporter Ann McAdams took home top honors in the Enterprise: Investigative category. Ann led WWAY's ongoing coverage of the Sen. R.C. Soles saga. Her early reporting about accusations made by some of the senator's legal clients against him eventually led to a SBI investigation into Soles that continues.

Reporter Hailey Winslow took home the prize for Enterprise: Documentary. Her 30-minute documentary "Science of the Sea" showcased Cape Fear Community College's Marine Technology program and the work faculty and students do on board the R/V Dan Moore.

The AP voters selected reporter John Rendleman for an Honorable Mention for Best Sports Feature. John's winning entry told the story of the Wilmington Tigers semi-pro football team as they prepared for the league championship game just days after their coach William Murphy died.
