NEW HANOVER COUNTY--Twenty-two thousand. That's the number of children that will die from cancer in the US this year. Fifty-six of them will be from North Carolina. Here in New Hanover County, volunteers teamed up with St. Jude's Children’s hospital to walk for a cure.
With each step they take, these volunteers are helping researchers move one step closer to finding a cure for childhood cancer. They're walking around Veterans Park, to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s hospital. "There are so many sick children so we felt what better charity to help than to help the children".
Walk-A-Thon coordinator Trish Julian says her group is proud to be partnering with St. Jude’s to help save lives, and make healthcare more affordable.
"Unfortunately with today's society, you know there are a lot of children that don't have medical insurance, and St. Jude's is one of the foundations that do allow children, families that don't have insurance to come out and get treatment and not have to worry about medical cost".
The group raised five thousand dollars before the walk and hopes to double that once the walk-a-thon is over. There simple stroll will help St. Jude’s get a step closer, to saving a life. A blessing indeed.
