Year-round schools start back today

READ MORE: Year-round schools start back today
It may be July, but for some New Hanover County kids, today meant heading back to school. Year-round schools began classes again after a five week vacation. Traditional public schools get 10 weeks. Two of the 24 public schools in the county, Codington and Eaton Elementary, are year-round schools. Year-round does not exactly mean year round. Kids do have breaks spread throughout the year. Both kids and parents were excited for the big day. Codington parent Howard Hoadley said, "All of our friends have another five weeks to go, the kids kind of hate that, but at the same time they go back to school very easily. It's not a big jolt. It's a short summer so it went by really quick so there's no time for them to really get bored." Margon Gray will take a closer look at the differences between traditional and year-round schools tomorrow on Good Morning Carolina.

year round school

I think people ought to get a reality check here and realize year round school is a parent choice. Mostly those who like the schedule like us. The children are still in school the same amount of days as regulated by the state and they receive the same instruction and the same quality instruction. Those who pass judgement need to chill out, because it is a parent choice not a forced plan. Don't like it keep your kids in traditional school

Year round rocks!

Codington Elementary is great! I wish the school board would quit playing with districts and work on converting or building new year round middle schools. It is great when the end of September rolls around, three weeks off to go on family vacations, then another three for Christmas. Get on the stick school board!

this is crazy!!

I just signed up my five year old for kindergarten to find out that her school starts August 25th and goes to June 10th. Only 3 days off for Easter (because it's not a holiday!!??) She starts her first schooling at five days a week 7 hours a day......what the heck happened here? Is this the governments way of getting the children out of the home?? I know that I am an older parent than most but this just seems so crazy to me. After looking over the calendar and seeing all the "teacher work days" etc...seems to me they need to find a more effective way to handle the work and keep the school year and day shorter.

I just love to read about

I just love to read about all these teacher work days and laugh. I'm an oldie brought up in the 50's and 60's. Teacher workdays were maybe 2 times a year. We had up to 40 kids in our classes with no teacher assistants and still got great educations.

School Calendar

This is very sad. The school calendar should run from the Tuesday after Labor Day to the Friday before Memorial Day.

I agree. It is an unusual

I agree. It is an unusual year when we have snow and ice days that keep the kids out of school. Hurricane days are as the season for that year goes. Those days can definiely be made up by using holidays off. Kids get the week after Christmas off and what do they do? Hang out waiting for school to start back up and the parents of little ones have to find a daycare provider as they all go back to work. There are just to many days off during the school year that missed days can be made up.

Sounds to me as if some

Sounds to me as if some parents rely on school as a babysitting service and not an educational facility. I like the fact that as a parent I can choose where my children attend school and I think everyone has the right to do this too. I like the amount of time my kids have off during the year. I use this time to make up for the amount of time they do spend in school. I use this as a perfect chance to do things as a family or one on one.I doubt the school calander changing because some of us find it bothersome to find a babysitter so try to make the best out of it. Do more with your kids!
