Chapel Hill man develops Web site to help with pool picks

CHAPEL HILL (AP) — There's a Chapel Hill man who's putting his computer science degree from UNC Chapel Hill to good use this week.

Tom Adams runs poologic.com, a Web site full of tournament tips that has gotten national attention. While the instructions are quite technical, the calculator can be helpful in pools that give people extra points for picking upsets.

Adams says one statistician used a similar approach in an upset-incentive pool. That contestant won in two of four seasons before pool organizers shut down their contest, then refused to invite him back when they restarted.

If you use his system and can cash in, Adams suggests that winners make a donation to the cancer research foundation set up by the late Jim Valvano, former North Carolina State basketball coach.

And how has Adams done with his own picks? He last won in 1999, when he picked Connecticut to beat Duke.
