Lovette and 19-year-old Stephen Oates of Durham are charged in the shooting of 29-year-old Abhijit Mahato. The computational mechanics doctoral student was found dead Jan. 18 inside his apartment a few blocks south of Duke's campus.

Oates was indicted last month, and will next appear in court the week of April 4. He also faces charges on 14 courts on robbery with a dangerous weapon and four courts of assault with a deadly weapon.

Lovette was tied to Mahato's death after his arrest last week in the slaying of University of North Carolina student body president Eve Carson. He is charged with murder in Orange County in her death.
