DURHAM (AP) — A Durham County prosecutor says investigators still don't know for sure who pulled the trigger in the fatal shooting death of a Duke University graduate student.
Assistant prosecutor Tracey Cline said Thursday investigators used ballistic evidence to track down a suspect in the robbery and slaying of Abhijit Mahato. She said witnesses in other armed robberies said that co-defendant Stephen Oates was the shooter in those cases.
Investigators tied co-defendant Laurence Lovette to the case through Mahato's cell phone, which was used on the night of his death to call several of Lovette's friends. She also said the 17-year-old had some of Mahato's possessions.
Lovette is also one of two people charged with murder in the death of University of North Carolina student body president Eve Carson. Police have not said who pulled the trigger in her death.
