Contest winner heads to Sundance for film about her beach litter crusade

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Recently we told you about Danielle Richardet, a Wilmington woman who spends about 20 minutes a day picking cigarette butts off Wrightsville Beach. Her mission was filmed by a crew last month to be shown at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah this weekend.

Richardet heads to the festival tomorrow, but she says the clean up never stops. She put off packing for at least 20 more minutes today to clean up more of the beach with her family.

“Whether it’s about cigarette butt litter or just anything, doing something in their community if they don’t like the way something is or they see something they wanna change that they look at it like it’s an opportunity to say, ‘You know, this girl, she’s just a mom…’ You don’t have to have special credentials to want to make a difference,” Richardet said.

Richardet’s film “It Starts with Me” debuts Saturday at Sundance. It will be on the Sundance cable channel in the next couple months.
