WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) — A Whiteville High School student-athlete got a painful lesson in love this week. The teenager’s girlfriend stabbed him in the head after getting jealous of other girls, but the couple says it was all a big accident.

Quamain Rose spends a lot of his time avoiding contact from would-be tacklers on the gridiron and defenders on the hardwood as a member of Whiteville High’s football and basketball teams. But early Wednesday morning, it was his girlfriend Josalyn Powell inflicting the pain.

“I went to sleep, and she went through my phone and saw some text messages from other females,” Rose said.

Rose said an angry Powell woke him up threatening to get a knife. When she did, he fought back.

“I was angry or whatever and went into the kitchen and got a knife to scare him, and when he saw I had a knife, he tried to tackle me head first,” Powell said.

She says Rose pushed her onto a couch and her head hit a wall. When she stood up again, that’s when Powell said she accidentally cut Rose above his right eye.

“I never thought it would go this far,” Rose said. “It shocked me.”

Powell and Rose have a child together, and powell said she didn’t intend to actually use the knife on Rose.

“I just cut my baby daddy, and I’m scared he might die or something,” Powell said. “My mind was just blank. I didn’t know what to do.”

Rose was taken to the hospital soon after, and received seven stitches above his right eye. Powell, very distraught over what she did, said she turned herself in and was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon, inflicting serious injuries.

“She didn’t mean to do it,” Rose said. “I know she didn’t mean to do it. It’s just when I pushed her down, she came back off the chair and got me in my eye.”

Rose was back at basketball practice yesterday and plans to play in tomorrow’s game against North Brunswick.

Powell is scheduled to appear in court February 7.

To start with, Quamain is a wonderful person inside and out. You should never judge someone, so until you know this young man personally, don’t criticize him! He is playing his role as a father and a student athlete very well! I give him nothing but good credit for the way he has taking this situation and made the best out of it. This young man not only strives on the court, but in school as well. He is always smiling and has a positive attitude about everything. Nobody wants to be a parent at 16, but its not stopping him from succeeding and reaching his goals. On the other hand, he doesn’t need people like Powell, the mother of his baby, to keep him from attaining those goals. Her irresponsible acts have shown her to be nothing but BADDD NEWS. Her violent ways show that she is not mature enough to be a mother, and NO child should have to go through that! I agree that things happen, but sometimes it is better to walk away from bad things in your life so you will be successful. Just a thought! I hope nothing but the best for Rose and his child.

This is an amazing post. I agree with everything you have said 110%. Quamain is an amazing person and father. He was trying to do the right thing, and still is. Encourage, not discourage. Watch what you say because you never know what others are going through or there exact situation.

Quamain is not only an outstanding athlete, but an outstanding young man as well. He made a mistake and found himself the father of a child. He is trying to do the right thing and be a father to his child. He deserves recognition for his attempts to maintain a relationship with the mother of his child in an attempt to be present in his child’s life. It is never a desired situation for a teen to become a parent. But it happened, and he is trying to make the best of it. I think those that stand around throwing stones at Quamain for his attempt at parenting need to reconsider their comments. I hope that Quamain will realize his potential in life and that he can be a better parent to his child if he will pursue his talents and abilities to improve his situation. I hope that he will realize that he will have to leave his current setting in order to move on to better things for himself and his child. And I hope he will realize that a birth mother is not always the best mother for a child. Her violent tendencies indicate that she is not suitable to be a parent to their child. Instead of throwing your insults at this young man, consider some encouraging words. I’m sure they will benefit him much more than mockery and cynicism.

It is so nice to see someone be positive about this young man. I know Quamain personally, and not only is he a good student, he is a wonderful young man. He is working so hard to make the best of the situation he is in. This year he is going above and beyond in his academics and wants to continue his education post high school. He has a lot of motivation and is very self-disciplined. Of course he is going to receive text messages from other females…he is friendly and has a lot of respect for others. He is also a star athlete and that makes him very appealing. I hope that Josalyn will learn to control her temper and grow up. It is well overdue. If she can’t, they need to move on. Not all parents can be together, but they need to be civilized and show some respect for each other. They have a child to raise and need to realize that their actions will impact this child’s future.

“I just cut my baby daddy.” Complete trash. And we wonder what is wrong with society. We tolerate this kind of behavior. It’s an embarrassment to the rest of civilized society.
