THE FOLLOWING IS A NEWS RELEASE FROM THE WILMINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT:
Time: 3:07 a.m. – Sunday morning
Location: 100 N. Second Street
Offense: Assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious bodily injury
Summary: WPD officers responded to the 900 block Rankin Street where they found a man who had been critically injured. He was inside a car and he had been stabbed in the chest. The victim was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center where he was expected to undergo surgery.
During the follow-up investigation, officers determined that the crime probably occurred elsewhere, and the victim subsequently was driven to Rankin Street.
Witnesses reported that the victim had been panhandling near 20 N. Front Street, and that he became involved in an altercation within an hour before he was found stabbed. The victim, believed to be 41 years old, has tentatively been identified, but detectives are working to confirm the identification.
