Perdue speaks to members of NC labor federation

RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina Gov. Bev Perdue is urging union members to help her resist budget cuts promised by the new Republican-led legislature.

Perdue spoke Tuesday to about 100 members of the North Carolina AFL-CIO before union members fanned out to ask their local lawmakers to place workers over business owners.

The AFL-CIO says it’s especially looking to block business interests from getting the changes they seek to North Carolina’s workers’ compensation system. Union leaders say they oppose cutting benefits and restricting eligibility for workers hurt or made sick by their jobs.

North Carolina already has the country’s lowest level of union membership. Just more than 3 percent of the state’s workers belong to a union, compared with about 12 percent nationally.
