NC Jazz Festival kicks off this weekend

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The smooth sounds of jazz will fill the air in downtown Wilmington later this week, when the 31st Annual North Carolina Jazz Festival hits the stage.

This year, the festival is dedicated to its founder, Dr. Harry Van Velsor, who died last year. The event is one of the oldest traditional jazz festivals in the country. It has quite the fan base.

Many people who will attend the festival this weekend actually travel from state to state, hitting up traditional jazz festivals around the country.

“This year we have 15 states (represented). Patrons come from all over this weekend,” said Sandy Evans, one of the festival’s organizers.

As for the musicians, they are not only coming from across the US. Some are from Italy, Australia and Canada.

The festival kicks off Thursday at 7:30 p.m. All concerts take place at the Wilmington Hilton Riverside.
