RALEIGH, NC (AP) — People carrying legally concealed handguns in North Carolina could take them into more restaurants and into state and local parks if an idea in the House becomes law.

A House judiciary committee recommended Wednesday a measure allowing someone with a concealed handgun permit to carry the weapon when eating in a restaurant that serves alcohol. The law would permit the hidden handgun in state parks and also prevent local governments from passing ordinances banning guns in parks they operate.

The bill now heads to the full House. It passed after narrow approval of a Democratic amendment that would require a restaurant employee to ask a customer getting a drink if they are carrying a concealed weapon. It’s against the law for someone armed that way to consume alcohol.
