TOPSAIL BEACH, NC (WWAY) — It looks like it’s happening once again. More dead and injured pelicans have washed ashore Topsail Beach. Deborah Woody, a volunteer with the Possumwood Acres Wildlife Santuary says in the past two weeks alone, there have been more than 20 dead and injured pelicans found along the beach.
In the fall, dozens of pelicans were found mutilated along Topsail. Some were found with what appeared to be gun shot wounds and others decapitated. According to Woody, this time around the pelicans were found mainly with broken wings.
“They are broken to the severity that we can’t repair and the kindest thing to do is euthanasia,” said Woody. “It’s such a shame.”
Susan Harvelle is staying at Topsail Beach for the holiday weekend. She says she doesn’t understand why this keeps happening.
“I just can’t imagine why,” said Harvelle. “I mean, I feel like someone obviously has to be killing them. What does a poor pelican do to deserve that?”
And Woody says she feels the same way. She says the injuries the pelicans have been found with are not of natural causes.
“Anything is a possibility at this point in the game,” said Woody. “We don’t know why or what is causing this. They are not natural injuries at all. What’s causing them, we don’t know. We wish we did.”
Woody says agencies including the North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services have been notified.
