State may remove kids from treatment center

NORFOLK, VA (AP) — North Carolina officials are considering withdrawing more than 100 youth from treatment centers for troubled kids in Virginia after the company that owns them failed to report a boy’s sexual abuse claim.

The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services completed its investigation into the incident at The Pines Residential Treatment Center in Norfolk on Thursday. The department found The Pines failed to properly document the incidents or to notify the state or the child’s parents.

North Carolina officials say they’ve suspended new admissions to The Pines facilities in Norfolk and Portsmouth. They say they’re also trying to determine appropriate placement for the 113 North Carolina children already at The Pines.
