BLACK MOUNTAIN, NC (AP) — Not everyone is happy that the
Montreat College men’s baseball coach has offered a small athletic
scholarship to a woman.

The Asheville-Citizen Times reported Tuesday that some alumni
have written letters objecting to Michael Bender’s efforts to
recruit a female pitcher from Lake Balboa, Calif.

Bender says Marti Sementelli is an excellent athlete, striking
out players in 14 of 22 innings. He says those worried about her
gender must be “simple” and “ignorant.”

Sementelli has not yet decided where she will attend college
next year.

At Montreat, Sementelli would be required to play junior varsity
baseball until earning a spot on the varsity team.

USA Baseball officials estimate that 1,000 girls play on high
school varsity teams nationwide, but very few play in college.
