Pender’s Addison Spruill signs with Brevard

BURGAW,NC (WWAY) — Pender senior Addison Spruill has earned all sorts of post-season awards this year. He was named to the all-state 1-A team. He was named to the east squad for this summer’s annual east-west all-star basketball game in Greensboro. Spruill never won a state title though at Pender, but he sure came close to winning one the last three seasons. In fact Pender made it all the way to the 1-A state title game in Raleigh, but the Patriots couldn’t hold onto their early large lead. Regardless, Addison Spruill will be playing college basketball next season at Brevard Community College in Florida. He turned down several offers much closer to home including Brunswick Community College and Cape Fear Community College. ” I want to travel a bit more,” Spruill said. “I think they play at a higher level in Florida than they do here. I’m already used to this around here. I could have gone division one, but I would have had to sit out a year because I wasn’t a qualifier.”

Gary Battle is the Pender boys basketball coach. “He could probably go one year there and move on or he can stay two, Battle said. “There will be an option for him.”

Gary Battle is also the Pender girls basketball coach. Pender guard Andrienne Bannerman also signed on Tuesday. The guard will play for the women’s basketball team at Erskine College in South Carolina. ” I’m going to miss both of them,” Battle said. “Since I’ve been here they’re two of the better athletes that have ever been here.”
