Donations keep Charlotte Red Cross chapter alive

CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — The Red Cross is known for helping people
in trouble, and now Charlotte has backed the Red Cross in its time
    of need.

The Charlotte Observer reported Thursday that an anonymous donor
presented the agency with a $125,000 check, to finish wiping out
the Charlotte chapter’s $1 million budget deficit.

A flurry of donations since February have included a $250,000
gift from Family Dollar CEO Howard Levine, an amount that was
matched by Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson and Bank of
    America CEO Ken Lewis.

The latest donation came as a challenge grant involving 150
    individuals and companies.

Charlotte Red Cross CEO Angela Broome says budget cuts have
reduced the staff by almost half since 2008. Meanwhile, demand for
    services has risen.

The chapter helped 773 families last year.
