WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police chased a man through downtown Wilmington this afternoon. The chase ended with a police car crashing into a tree and the suspect’s car also running off the road.
Police say they arrested Laquin Hines. Relatives say Hines is the cousin of Al’Quon Flowers, who’s been missing since last week.
Wilmington Police tell us it all started with a call to dispatch that someone was shooting from a silver car around the 800 block of Wooster Street. A police officer chased the car, which police say was traveling at speeds up to 90 mph.
Police eventually caught Hines near the corner of 6th and Dock Streets, where the two cars crashed.
Hines’s fiancee, who would only identify herself as Kim, said she was in the car with Hines and another man this afternoon. She said they stopped on Queen Street, where Hines and the other man got out to talk to some girls. That’s when Kim said a group of 10 to 12 men jumped her fiancee. She says she ran away, and that’s the last she saw of Hines.
A handgun was found in the 1800 block of Dawson Street, which police believe Hines had tossed out the window.
Kim says Hines has a lot on his mind. She says he’s been worried about his cousin Al ‘Quon
“He’s got his cousin missing,” said Kim. “He has a blood disease. He has another one that’s locked up for something he didn’t do. His son is real sick and I need him right now.”
Police say Hines is likely to be charged with felony speeding to elude an officer, hit and run, driving during revocation and reckless driving to endanger.
Lucy Crockett, a Wilmington Police spokeswoman, says the high-speed chase will be evaluated to see if the officer acted according to policy.
