WILMINGTON,NC (UNCW news release) – Matchups with Atlantic Coast Conference foes Maryland and Wake Forest and a pre-Christmas clash with Final Four participant VCU highlight the early portion of UNCW’s men’s basketball schedule for 2011-12.
The Seahawks, who begin their second season under Buzz Peterson, open the new campaign with a 4 p.m. tip-off on Oct. 29 against NCAA Division II St. Andrews in Trask Coliseum’s new-look unveiling. The whirlwind non-conference slate then features back-to-back road trips to Maryland and Dayton before kicking into high gear with nine more games in the last two months of the calendar year.
“It’s a very challenging schedule for such a young team,” said Peterson, who will welcome eight freshmen recruits to his roster. “We’re also pleased to be able to bring several regional opponents to Trask Coliseum. It should be an enjoyable home schedule for our fans.”
UNCW’s 10 non-conference opponents posted a combined 158-169 (.483) record last season and three teams – Furman, Dayton and Marshall – won 20 or more games. The Seahawks and Paladins are meeting for the first time.
The 2011-12 opponents and their final NCAA RPI’s include: Campbell (280), Davidson (170), Dayton (79), Furman (112), Illinois State (252), Liberty (186), Marshall (72), Maryland (97), Toledo (338) and Wake Forest (256).
The Seahawks make their first two road trips against familiar post-season opponents. Maryland handed UNCW a stunning 75-73 loss on March 21, 2003, in the NCAA Tournament and Dayton handed UNCW a 68-59 setback on March 14, 2001, in the NIT.
While the VCU game on Dec. 17 is locked in, the remainder of the CAA schedule will be announced later after televised dates have been determined.
Notes: Maryland’s Mark Turgeon and Dayton’s Archie Miller are in their first season with their programs…UNCW faced Turgeon on Nov. 25, 2008, in College Station, Texas, when Turgeon’s Texas A&M Aggies posted an 84-65 win…Miller is a 2002 graduate of N.C. State…UNCW is playing Davidson for the first time since the Seahawks pulled of a 73-56 victory over the Wildcats on Dec. 5, 1995, in Jerry Wainwright’s second season…UNCW’s 10 non-conference opponents hail from seven different conferences…The Seahawks will also make their seventh appearance in the ESPN BracketBusters series with a road date in early February.
