NASSAU,BAHAMAS (UNCW news release) – The Bahamas All-Stars bounced back from an early deficit and went on to outscore UNCW, 94-87, in an exhibition men’s basketball exhibition game Friday night at the Kendal Isaacs Gymnasium.

The Seahawks, who rolled past the Cybots, 96-68, on Thursday, wrapped up their two-game swing to the Bahamas as part of the Bahamas Basketball Federation’s third annual “Summer of Thunder.” The Bahamas All-Stars included players from the national team from the islands.

“Tonight’s game was a great experience for our team,” said UNCW skipper Buzz Peterson. “The All-Stars are very talented and as a staff we learned a lot about our team tonight. Our effort has been great since day one of practice, and I really like where our effort has been.”

Freshman KK Simmons paced three Seahawks in double figures with 16 points in just 15 minutes of play, including 4-for-7 behind the arc. Another newcomer, Cedrick Williams just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds, while rookie Craig Ponder collected 10 points.

Veteran guard Mitch Johnson exploded for 35 points and added six rebounds for the All-Stars, who forced 28 turnovers by the Seahawks. Center Kadeem Coleby chipped in 19 points and seven boards.

“Johnson is a former college player and now plays professionally in Mexico,” added Peterson. “He hurt us off the dribble, getting to the free-throw line 18 times. We really benefitted by playing against such an experienced team, we will grow from this game.”

UNCW outrebounded the All-Stars by a wide 45-25 margin, but the home team went to the line more often and cashed in, outscoring the Seahawks, 29-10, at the charity stripe. The All-Stars went 29-for-44 at the line and the Seahawks wound up 10-of-12.

The Seahawks are scheduled to return to the Port City late Saturday afternoon.

Peterson said, “Our team and staff would like to thank Athletic Director Jimmy Bass for allowing our team this great opportunity. We also would like to thank the staff at Basketball Travelers Inc. for an amazing trip and great competition.”
