Henderson Co. residents discuss steep-slope issues

HENDERSONVILLE, NC (AP) — Residents of Henderson County have discussed steep-slope issues as they reviewed a landslide hazard map.

The Times-News of Hendersonville reported that about 30 people attended a steep-slope forum Monday at the
Henderson County Public Library. The Environmental and Conservation Organization sponsored the session and will post a general map highlighting high-risk areas on its website next week.

Senior geologist Rick Wooten of the state Department of Environmental Resources says a more detailed map is available on CD for free through the North Carolina Geological Survey’s main office in Raleigh.

The agency has identified 88 landslides in Henderson County in the past 94 years, compared with more than 2,000 in Watauga County.
