WWII veteran from NC takes 1st tandem jump

RAEFORD, NC (AP) — A World War II veteran from Laurinburg who took his first tandem parachute jump at the age of 95 says the experience was “lovely.”

The Fayetteville Observer reported that Dr. Winston Tornow jumped Sunday at PK Air Park in Raeford. His tandem partner and instructor was Mike Elliott, a retired soldier and former member of the Golden Knights, the U.S. Parachute Team.

As a Golden Knight, Elliott had jumped with former President George H.W. Bush.

Tornow is a retired veterinarian and says he never felt scared as he fell 12,500 feet at the Raeford Parachute Center School.

He says he decided to jump after his wife, Martha Jane McNair, died last year. Their son, McNair Tornow of Beech Mountain, arranged the jump.
