CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) — North Carolina senior kicker Casey Barth won’t play again this year and will pursue a medical redshirt to return in 2012.

Barth has missed the past four games with what the school had called a thigh injury in previous weeks, though UNC said Thursday that Barth strained his groin in the first half of last month’s win against Virginia.

The Wilmington native had made 11 extra points and a 46-yard field goal in the first three games. Barth is four field goals from breaking his brother Connor’s school record of 54 for his career.

Redshirt freshman Thomas Moore has handled the kicking duties in Barth’s absence. The Tar Heels (5-2, 1-2) travel to No. 8 Clemson on Saturday.
