WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A lockdown at UNCW earlier this week began after an armed robbery at a nearby restaurant. Today one of the victims of that robbery spoke out.
“I was scared,” the woman said. “I was like, ‘Oh, God, please. This is not really happening. This is not really happening.’ I was just trying to remain calm.”
This victim did not want to show her face or give her name for fear the gunman could come after her.
“If he is in a gang or was involved in any type of situation like that, you know they would be after me,” she said.
The gunman stole both women’s cell phones and wallets before running into the woods on the UNCW campus nearby. UNCW police promptly responded to the robbery, sending out mass texts and e-mails telling students to stay inside.
“Running towards the campus with a gun, I think there was a big threat to them and I’m glad the alerts went out right away because we were just on the campus and there were a ton of kids still outside,” the victim said.
Police lifted the lockdown a few hours later when they believed the gunman had left campus.
The victim says the robber’s behavior was very odd. Besides pointing a gun at her, she says he was very polite, thanking them for handing over their possessions. She is afraid the man robbed her as part of a gang initiation.
“You wouldn’t think that a mugger would sit there and let you keep your laptop,” she said. “My iPod was sitting right there, too, and he didn’t take that, and you wouldn’t think that he would say thank you over and over, so I just don’t understand.”
Wilmington Police say no one has been arrested for the robbery, but the investigation continues. They say they are looking for a light-skinned black man in his twenties with green eyes and a deep voice. They say he is about 5’11” with a stocky build. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with a red bandana partially covering his face.
