WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A Wilmington gym is in the Christmas spirit for man’s best friend.

Gold’s Gym on Racine Drive held a food drive for needy pets and their owners. All the food and toys collected will benefit two area animal rescue groups. The supplies will not only be used for animals in the shelters, but they will also be handed out to needy families with pets.

Gold’s gave anyone who donated this weekend a free seven-day pass to the gym. Organizers say the turnout was amazing. Even a competitor came out to donate.

“it just goes to show you that you can all band together for a good cause,” Gold’s Gym’s Judi Edelman said. “We all love animals, and we have to take care of our furry friends, ’cause it’s that unconditional love that you can’t get from anybody. They always say an animal is the only thing on earth that will love you more than they love themselves, and that’s pretty hard to find.”

Gold’s Gym plans to make the pet food drive an annual event.
