Donors rush to charities ahead of New Year’s tax deadline

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s a great time of year to give and to receive. Charities are being flooded with donations right now, but those good deeds don’t only help those in need.

This week is historically one of the biggest weeks for generosity as people donate money and used items to charities.

“Clothing to household items, you name it, we’re getting it,” Goodwill Foundation spokeswoman Becky Lytle said.

Chris Gulley donated to Goodwill this week.

“It seemed like a good thing to do,” Gulley said. “The economy is still poor, and to give it to people who can actually use it and benefit more than me.”

The generosity doesn’t just benefit others. It can also pay off come tax season.

“It’s the last opportunity for people to make a donation and to be able to claim on their taxes for this year,” Lytle said.

If you’re bringing in a big bag of items to donate and want to claim it on your taxes, be sure to make an itemized list and determine each item’s value. Lytle says Goodwill’s website is a great place to figure out the value of your donated items.

“If they’ll go to the retail page, there is a price list of the prices we charge for the items that they’ve donated, and they can use that to help estimate the value of their items,” Lytle said.

Other charities, like the United Way, only take monetary donations, but also say this time of year sees a huge influx of gifts.

“We see the majority of those gifts come in between November, usually between Thanksgiving and the end of the year,” said Melissa Reabold of the United Way of the Cape Fear Area.

Not only is this time of year a great opportunity to donate, but also a great time of need.

“This day and age, we need all the help we can get, and that will help maybe a little bit, but it all helps,” Gulley said.

There are several websites that will help you figure out the value of your donated items. To find them simply Google “donation value.”
