WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The victim in last night’s fatal shooting has been identified as 22-year-old David Terrell McPhatter, of Riegelwood.

Family members did not want to speak on camera, but they told WWAY McPhatter was in Wilmington visiting when a group of men affiliated with the Bloods gang came looking for him. They say the gang members also live in Riegelwood.

Wilmington Police say a fight broke out between two men in the 800 block of Castle Street just before 11 p.m. Saturday. The fight apparently led to a shooting. McPhatter died at the scene due to multiple gunshot wounds.

The shooter took off. He’s still on the loose.

WPD investigators welcome information from anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or have information about it. Witnesses have said there were at least 100 people in the general area at the time of the murder.

Some of you are real internet tough guys. “Good riddance, bloods killing bloods”…..etc etc. Now I will be the last person defending gang members & criminals (not saying he was or he wasn’t). However, gang memebers shooting each other on a public street where I am sure there are innocent women & children is not a good thing.

Some of ya’ll go from blog to blog running that mouth. And usually, you only run it when there is a non-white entity involved. You know who I am talking to. If you think I’m talking about you, I am.

  • PublicAvenger

Did you give the police your name ? So they can use you as a witness, and hopefully bring this killer to justice. Or are you just a finger-pointing coward ?

  • Theressa

Thank you so much for your comforting words, and I am so sorry for your lost>

@GRAND OLE PARTY I dedicate this hand sign to you in remembrance of David McPhatter & all the other innocent young black men who lost their lives & their story was published here on WWAYTV3 & you ridiculed & passed judgement on them!!! FYI: Grand Ole Party.. YOU ARE A BLOG STALKING RACIST!!! What makes you better than a “THUG”??? GET A LIFE!!! …choose to steal, rape, rob, murder and pillage innocent citizens! You want sensitivity? You want compassion? You want respect? Get a job! Pay your taxes! Pay for your healthcare! Pay for your insurance! Get OFF the government dole! And for Gods sake HELP your fellow man instead on intentionally committing crimes against him, his family and is property!

You’re correct! There is “…something in a world where a life is taken…” You know what that is, it’s the criminals that have no morals, no boundaries, no compassion and DO NOT care if YOU die during the commission of their selfish crimes! They are in and out of courtrooms on a daily basis with a huge grin on their face knowing they’ve skated once again. There’s a start for you. Perhaps now you can become a philosopher.

Does any of this ring a bell with your 3rd brain cell, or has it made it past the first one yet? THINK!!!

It was a pre-fourth of July killing at a pre-mothers day block party. For those of us that choose not to join gangs, murder, rape, and steal this is a win win situation. One gang banger dead and one headed to prison for life. Two less thugs roaming the streets.

  • Grand Ole Party

The family submitted a picture of him that will shine a better light on him. However the rest of us did not fail to see the picture of him throwing up a gang sign. He was not a victim, he was an active participant. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Pretty simple.

  • Grand Ole Party

I reckon if he didn’t deserve to die like that he should have chose to live the life of a man instead of a punk thug. Don’t ya reckon?

  • tweety

    well said

  • Reggie

I’ve never seen so many insensitive posts on an issue. The young man is dead and none of us know the whole story. But what I do know is something is very wrong in the world when a life is lost or taken and we chose to spew hatred such as these posts I’ve read. God help us all if this is the true feelings in our hearts.

  • Nelly

I Usually dont Comment on these things, due to the Ignorance that these Hateful people post. smh but I will say this. IT WAS NOT 100 People there, it was about 25 of us. When People heard the gunshots, and saw the cops Pulled Up THATS WHEN THE CROWD GREW, and By then the Gunmen Fled on foot. Those Of us who were there and Witnessed David get killed, we DID tell the police the killers name. my friend even showed the cops his fb page. its up to THEM from here on out to catch the killer, we spoke up and did our parts. you guys are so qucik to judge without knowing all the facts. it wasnt some Violent night, It was a Pre Mothers day block party gone bad.

  • Guestez

The said shooter then post his information here. Maybe just maybe it’s someone we know but don’t realize he’s wanted for this shooting.

  • Theresa

Look @ the Pic now summitted by his family, David Was a good kid that graduated from Miliatary school that became a victim of a senseless crime against him that caused him his life . David was a hard working young man that worked everyday for a living. David will truly be missed by family and friends. May God show you Mercy on judgement day.
    Grieving family member

  • tweety

Do you know for a fact this young man was in a gang, you say his parents didn’t care. why is that if he was in a gang how do you know what his parents told how or what conversations they had.Because you have a college degree a great life do that make you better than someone that doesn’t(by the way yes i do have all of that and served my country does that make me better)and rather you admit this or not you didn’t always do everything your parents told you you will say you did but you didn’t.Is it possible that he resisted that life and was killed because of that?Glad your life is one great ball of happiness and what church do you attend so i can stay away from there there is no love there or maybe it is just(kkk love)

  • Theresa

How can you state the true about someone you never meet! David graduated from a military school and worked everyday for a living. David was a quite well mannered young who never ever got into trouble and unfortuntely he became a victim of a senseless crime. David was very much loved by his family and friends. So before you prejudge a person get the facts! May God bless you with much success in all your endeavors! Because David can not!!!
    From his grieving Aunt!

  • Theresa

This Young man was not a thug he was a good hard working young man that graduate from military school with honors. David became a Victim of a serious crime that caused his death and we the family, is grieving over the lost of our loved one that didn’t deserve to died like this!

  • Abby

There is a BIG difference between the two of us. I was raised right, played sports, went to school, have a degree, have a great career and life. I chose the right people to hang out with and have the greatest friends in the world. I chose the right path in life.

He chose the wrong path, his family didn’t care he was in a gang as they knew about it and knew his death was gang related. He had nothing going for him, being in a gang. Up to no good with drugs.

Yes we are all created the same way but it’s the choices we make in life.

Also to set you straight I do know god, we have completely different beliefs in life. He caused his own death by being in a gang, guns, drugs etc. The three strikes (gangs, gun, & drugs). He chose that life, no one chose it for him. So no I have no sympathy for him nor his family. 1 – He chose that path in life 2- His family did nothing about it.

No i am not a sick individual I am just one who states the truth, tells it like it is! Like it or not its the truth. :)

  • Abby

Thank you for your post! I agree with you! My parents raised me right, went to school, got a college degree have a great career going for myself. I would not change anything in the world. I have the best friends & family. I chose the right path in life and I deserve to be where i am at today with my life & career.

This kid chose the life of a gang banger, he knew it would come to an end. When you hear about gangs the only thing that comes to mind are drugs, guns, death. His family did nothing to point him in the right direction they knew and even admitted to him being in a gang and when they found out about his death they knew it was gang related. How sad is that?

God has nothing to do with it either! It’s all about the decisions that each person makes in life. I chose the right back of success and he didn’t.

Like I say & others have said you chose the path you take in life no one makes that choice for you!

  • Guest1234

Good riddance. Another drain on society is gone

  • guesty

Gang members are like roaches or rats…. they usually live in the shadows.

  • Guest 101

100 people at the party and nobody can identify the killer??? If you’re not brave enough or don’t have enough sense to tell the police who did it, wallow in your own mess I say.

That’s one of the reasons most people now-a-days have little to no sympathy for the black community. It seems blacks just won’t help themselves and are content to cry and complain but do nothing.

Buck up and end your own suffering I say! It’s well past time for the blaclk community to own their self imposed problems and work torwards a solution. Nobody is “holding you down” or oppressing you anymore except your own race.

It “seems” that blacks especially the black youth want to glorify thug / gang culture. They wnat to act like, look like and be like thugs and gand members….well here’s the brutal outcome.

  • livinrite

This young man chose to be in a gang and did pay the ultimate price in the end. It’s possible his end was no worse than some the crimes he has committed against others and their families in their opinions, with him having been an active willing participate in a gang. So I feel sure he has been close to death before and dodged it but chose to continue this lifestyle. A hateful human shot him with intentions of inflicting harm upon this young man but it was ultimatly god that decided it was time for him to leave this earth. Hes probaly had numerous chances to turn his life around and hadnt, it was his time.

  • Guest 10101

… someone like YOU pops up to tell the rest of us how wrong WE are. I, for one, am really sick of it.

You always claim to have the inside track on God (God’s Number 7 is a good example of that) and always claim that we’re the haters.

I guess you’ve forgotton the stories from your Bible where God destroyed almost the entire world with the flood or destroyed entire cities that were in the way of the Israelites claiming the land of Caanan. That sound like “God is love” to you? And you have the nerve to say others know nothing about God. Except you, of course.

There is a big difference between a poster like Abby and this young man. He was a criminal and chose to be one, not Abby.

The streets didn’t consume him, he did this to himself by choosing a negative lifestyle. Others who were close to him did little to prevent that. Is that someone else’s fault too?

No one is consumed by hatred. There are a lot of people though that are probably relieved that a person who deliberately chose to live a criminal lifestyle is no longer in a position to harm others.

Blaming everyone else simply encourages more bad behaviour. Instead, try learning from a tragedy like this and work towards preventing it from happening again. I don’t pretend to speak for God but I would like to think that’s the kind of thing He would want us to do.

  • Guestez

I didn’t know Riegelwood had gangs there? Did they mean Wilmington??

  • Lucy

Good excuse of per-mothers day party? That is so lame.

Didn’t know per-mothers day parties included gang bangers & drugs?

Nice cover up, we are not stupid and we were not born yesterday.

  • GuestGod’s Number 7

This is to Abby, I hope you never have a tragedy to come your way. You really need love in your heart. I know for a fact that you don’t attend church or even know anything about God. God is Love and you must have passion before you can have compassionate, you exemplify neither. How can someone that breaths God air talk so negative about a life that God created. You are a sick individual. Hate is a pain that will always exist in someone like you. There is no difference between you and the young man that died. He is a dead soul and you are a living soul that is lost. He was consumed by the streets and you are consumed by hatred. Two dead souls(one laying down and one standing up).

  • anne

Nothing will change until these kids realize that the gang life is not what they need. Oh yes, these people make you feel welcome and treat you like family, until you try to leave, and then you are dead. I feel for the family of this young man. He was a son, a brother, a human being, regardless of his choices. It is a shame when anyone dies, especially this young.

With all that being said, he chose this life. When you live by the sword, you will die by the sword. He chose to hang with those who think it is okay to hurt or kill others and he paid the ultimate price with his life. His bad decision did not end well.

As for all the nasty comments made, why? Regardless of what he did or who he was, after all, he was a human being. Keep that in mind, because we never know when it could strike a family member or a friend.

  • guesty

From the story: “Witnesses have said there were at least 100 people in the general area at the time of the murder.”

Nobody done did see nutfin up in here.

Any they wonder why the crime continues, none of them have the spine to stand up against these thugs.

  • gggggunit

The pic of him shows him doin a gang sign with his hand. And is this the best picture the family could provide? Lol. Smoking while putting up the ol gang signs. He looks like a real winner plus a chicken dinner………as soon as he stole 1. G-g-g-g-g-unit. Lol. Its all in the music. Lol. They think the fake gangster rappers are real. They r so easily brainwashed by the crapola they call music. Thuglife fo-eva…….or until u get shot. Did I mention G-G-G-G-UNIT.

  • GuestOccasional

tweety, I read your comments in the other article about the loss of the young UNCW student. Unfortunately, that article has been shut down to new comments else I would have extended my compliments to you there.

Your words reflect wisdom and restraint. Your call for compassion for the families of both of the young men who have lost their lives is truly godliness at work. Thank you.

My condolences to both families at this time of terrible loss to them.
