WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW sports release) — The UNCW women’s golf program has received a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA for the third consecutive year for placing among the top 10 percent nationally for its work in the classroom.

The NCAA honored 950 Division I teams Thursday with public recognition awards for their latest multi-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores. The teams recorded multi-year APR scores in the top 10 percent of all squads in their respective sports.

The APR is a yearly measure of eligibility and retention for student-athletes competing on every Division I sports team. Thursday’s APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that includes scores from the 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10 and 2010-11 academic years.

In seven years of the NCAA’s academic reform program, 2,946 different teams have received Public Recognition Awards, representing 46 percent of eligible teams during that time. Of that total, 209 teams have received Public Recognition Awards each year of the program.

““I’m very proud of the women’s golf program for continuing to achieve a perfect APR score,” said 10th-year UNCW Coach Cindy Ho, the 2012 CAA Coach-of-the-Year. “Academic success and graduation have always been priorities for the women’s golf team members and the perfect APR score reflects their dedication and commitment in the classroom. Our academic support staff and faculty work very closely with our student-athletes providing the guidance and mentoring necessary in their academic achievement, and share in our APR success.”

CARY, NC (Sea Dawgs news release) — The Wilmington Sea Dawgs lost on Thursday night against the Cary Invasion in the TRBL semifinal game by a score of 127-104. Depending on the outcome of Friday night’s game, Cary will take on either the Prime Time Players or the Fayetteville Crossover in the TRBL Championship Game on Saturday.

OKLAHOMA CITY, OK (AP) – LeBron James scored 32 points and hit the clinching free throws with 7 seconds left, Dwyane Wade added 24 points and the Miami Heat claimed home-court advantage in the NBA Finals by beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 100-96 in Game 2 on Thursday night.

The Thunder stormed back from a 13-point, fourth-quarter deficit and had a chance to tie it on Kevin Durant’s 7-footer along the left baseline with 10 seconds left. James provided the defense on the shot and rebounded the miss before getting fouled and hitting two clutch free throws.

Durant finished with 32 points and Russell Westbrook had 27 but the Thunder weren’t able to overcome a double-digit deficit.

The series is tied at a game apiece heading into Game 3 on Sunday night in Miami.
