WILMINGTON,NC (UNCW sports release) — UNCW assistant men’s basketball coach Brooks Lee has resigned to pursue other interests, Head Coach Buzz Peterson announced early Friday.

“We really appreciate Brooks’ efforts and his loyalty to UNCW basketball,” said Peterson. Lee will continue to assist with recruiting until leaving on Aug. 16. “We wish him all the best in his future endeavors”

Lee, 31, joined the UNCW program five years ago and served in three different capacities with the Seahawks. He was an assistant coach during the 2007-08, 2008-09 and 2009-10 campaigns before moving over to the operations post on Peterson’s staff in 2010-11. Peterson then elevated him back to assistant coach in 2011-12. In between, Lee was interim head coach of the Seahawks for the final 10 games of the 2009-10 season.

“As I’ve discussed with Coach Peterson, this was a very difficult decision that came down to personal factors,” said Lee. “I am pursuing a professional opportunity outside of basketball in the private sector.

“I’d like to thank Coach Peterson for hiring me to be on his staff. I have enjoyed my five seasons at UNCW, and I will miss the players, coaches and loyal Seahawk supporters. I wish them all the best for the upcoming season and beyond.”

UNCW was Lee’s fourth stop in collegiate basketball. He began his career as an assistant for Mike Young at Wofford in 2002-03 and was the Director of Basketball Operations at East Carolina in 2004-05 after spending two seasons at UNC Greensboro.

As a player, Lee began his collegiate career at High Point before transferring to Campbell to play for his father, Billy. Lee played his final two years in Buies Creek, starting all 53 games and averaging 9.7 points and 4.3 assists.

Lee earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management in 2002 from Campbell and completed his Master’s Degree in Exercise Science at CU in 2003.
