WILMINGTON, NC (StarNewsOnline.com) — Voters won’t be able to cast ballots on the UNCW campus during this year’s early voting period, despite the urging of some students and faculty, election candidates and voter advocacy groups.
The topic has generated discussion and debate in political circles in the past couple of weeks. But officials at both the University of North Carolina Wilmington and the New Hanover County Board of Elections said this week that the university won’t open its doors to voters during early voting, which is scheduled to run from Oct. 18 through Nov. 3.
UNCW officials said Monday in response to StarNews questions that they never received a formal request from the board of elections to provide a location. It has provided space in the past for an Election Day polling place and will do so again this year, said UNCW spokesman Max Allen.
