LAKE WACCAMAW, NC (WWAY) — A whale skull fossil found in Lake Waccamaw four years ago is now on exhibit.

Scientists estimate the fossil is 2.75 million years old. They also say they may have discovered an entirely new species.

Two women found the fossil in 2008. They stubbed their toes on what they thought was an old cypress tree.

Turns out, it was the skull of an approximately 20-foot long baleen whale. It was also the most complete skull fossil known in the world.

Today, Lake Waccamaw State Park dedicated an to showcase the fossil.
