WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Two more cases of rabies have been confirmed in New Hanover County raising the total number of cases this year to 17.

New Hanover County Animal Services says the latest cases were in a raccoon on Splitbrook Court in Wilmington Friday that may have come in contact with a dog and another raccoon that fought with a dog on Rockhill Road in Castle Hayne yesterday.

The dog that fought with the raccoon in Castle Hayne was not current on its rabies vaccine. Animal Services says it will have to be destroyed or quarantined for six months in accordance with state law.
