RALEIGH, NC (AP) — North Carolina’s tradition of public empowerment means voters again are electing not only a governor and lieutenant governor but eight department heads responsible for important tasks that some other states allow the governor to choose.

Elections for secretary of state, auditor, labor commissioner, state schools superintendent, treasurer, agriculture commissioner, attorney general and insurance commissioner come every four years. Again this year they have generated little attention except from the business interests that stand to win contracts from or are regulated by the officials’ departments.

The muted interest was clearest when Attorney General Roy Cooper faced no challengers in the primary or general elections, assuring him a fourth four-year term.
