WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The Battleship North Carolina’s second half century in Wilmington got off to a good start with visitors.

The Battleship announced today that attendance for the Fiscal Year 2012 was the best the ship has had in 10 years and one of the best financial operating years since coming to Wilmington. From October 1, 2011, until September 30, 216,438 visitors paid to tour the Battleship.

On October 2, 2011, the Battleship celebrated the 50th anniversary of its arrival in Wilmington after being saved the scrap heap. The ship was dedicated as North Carolina’s official World War II veterans memorial on April 29, 1962.
